Immigration & American identity

Grade 5 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we will explore how people moving to America helped the country grow!

Immigration means people moving from one country to live in another. Migration means moving from one part of a country to another. Both of these movements changed the United States in big ways.

When new people arrived, they brought their skills and hard work. They helped build railroads, factories, and cities. This work made the American economy grow much faster and stronger.

Building New Railroads

Immigrants also started new businesses and brought new ideas. This created more jobs for everyone. The mix of different cultures shaped our modern American identity.

New Businesses & Jobs
✏️ Worked example

Let us analyze how the arrival of millions of European immigrants in the late 1800s helped the U.S. economy grow. We will look at this step-by-step.

  1. Step 1: Identify the main event. Millions of people moved to the United States from Europe.
  2. Step 2: Look at what the country needed. At that time, the U.S. was building huge factories and long railroads.
  3. Step 3: Connect the people to the work. The new immigrants took jobs in these factories and built the tracks.
  4. Step 4: Analyze the economic result. More factories and railroads meant businesses could make and ship goods faster, which made the whole country wealthier.
