Long ago, many different Native American groups lived across this land. Each group had its own language, homes, and special ways of living.
Many Native American groups passed down their history out loud instead of writing it down. They told stories to teach lessons and pass down rules. Others did write: the Maya used a full hieroglyphic writing system and made folding books out of bark paper.
To learn from oral stories, we must listen actively. We listen closely, ask questions to understand, and repeat the steps in order.
Imagine a Caddo elder is teaching you how to build a grass home. They give you these steps: First, gather long wooden poles. Second, bend the poles into a dome shape. Third, cover the dome with thick grass. How do you listen and repeat these steps?
- First, listen closely without talking while the elder speaks.
- Next, ask a good question like, 'How do we tie the poles together?'
- Then, repeat the steps back in the exact order you heard them.
- Say: 'First we get poles, next we bend them, and last we add grass.'
