The United States is a very big country. To make it easier to study, we divide the fifty states into five main regions based on their location and land.
Before you start reading about a new region, it helps to set a purpose. Ask yourself, 'Why am I reading this?' This helps your brain focus on finding key details.
Good readers ask questions before, during, and after they read. Asking questions like 'How does the climate shape this region?' helps you understand the text much deeper.
Let us practice setting a purpose and asking questions about the Northeast region of the United States. We will read a short passage and model this thinking step by step.
- Step 1: Set a purpose for reading. Since we are reading about the Northeast, our goal is to find out what makes this region unique.
- Step 2: Ask a question before reading. We can ask: 'What kind of land and weather does the Northeast have?'
- Step 3: Read the text. 'The Northeast has rocky coasts, high mountains, and cold winters. It has many big cities and is the smallest region.'
- Step 4: Ask questions during reading to stay active. We can ask: 'Why did people build so many big cities near rocky coasts?'
- Step 5: Ask a question after reading to think deeper. We can ask: 'How does the cold winter weather affect the people who live there?'
