World geography

Grade 5 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly study buddy. Today, we are going inside a world map to find amazing places!

Our planet Earth is covered in huge landforms and giant bodies of water. The seven largest pieces of land are called continents, and the five largest areas of water are called oceans.

Let us look at North America! On this continent, we can locate three large countries: Canada at the top, the United States in the middle, and Mexico at the bottom.

Canada United States Mexico Texas

To find smaller places, we zoom in closer. Inside the United States, we can locate the state of Texas, its capital city Austin, and the national capital city Washington, D.C.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are looking at a world globe. Explain how you would find your local community starting from the largest view of the Earth.

  1. First, look at the whole globe to identify the seven continents and find North America.
  2. Second, locate the United States in the middle of North America, between Canada and Mexico.
  3. Third, look inside the southern part of the United States to locate the large state of Texas.
  4. Fourth, find the state capital, Austin, or zoom into your own local neighborhood on the state map.
