A community is a group of people who share a place, institutions, and a way of life. Its culture is the set of beliefs, language, art, music, food, and traditions its members share, and it is learned and passed from one generation to the next.
We learn about a culture by interviewing the people who live it, asking careful questions, and comparing what we hear with written and visual sources. Cultures also change through diffusion, as ideas, foods, and music spread between groups that trade with or migrate to one another.
Communities also depend on economic exchange. Trade lets people specialize in what they produce best, and it carries culture along with it, so the foods, instruments, and crafts at a local festival often traveled the same routes as its goods.
Imagine your friend is hosting a cultural fair. Walk through how to actively listen to their instructions, ask a question to clarify, and then buy a small 5¢ treat using the correct symbol.
- Listen actively to your friend's oral instructions: 'First, visit the music booth. Second, choose a treat. Third, pay the helper.'
- Restate the steps in your mind to make sure you understand the sequence of actions.
- Ask a polite question to clarify: 'Should I buy the treat before or after I visit the music booth?'
- Listen to the answer: 'Visit the music booth first!'
- Use phonics skills to speak clearly as you say: 'Thank you for explaining!'
