The United States has a national government that helps make laws and keep us safe. The leader of this national government is the president. Over time, many different people have served as president, from our first leader to our leader today.
George Washington was the first president, and he set lasting examples, such as stepping down after two terms. Later presidents faced very different tests: Abraham Lincoln led the nation through the Civil War, and Franklin D. Roosevelt guided it through the Great Depression and World War II. Presidents today still head the executive branch, command the armed forces, and can veto bills passed by Congress.
To understand leaders, we compare their goals and the times they lived in. Past leaders created our first national systems. Present leaders use those same systems to solve modern problems like building new highways or managing technology.
Let's practice the thinking skill of comparing. Imagine you have a past president from 1800 and a present president today. How do we compare their jobs to see what is the same and what is different?
- Identify the past leader. For example, John Adams was a past president in the year 1800.
- Identify the present leader. This is the current president of the United States today.
- Find one similarity. Both leaders must follow the US Constitution and protect the country.
- Find one difference. The past president dealt with horse-drawn travel. The present president deals with modern issues like space travel and computers.
- Explain the comparison. We see that while their daily tools changed, their main job to lead the nation remained the same.
