Welcome! Today we will explore why the American colonists decided to break away from King George III.
In 1776, American colonists wrote the Declaration of Independence. They listed grievances, or official complaints, against the British king.
One major complaint was taxation without representation. The king forced colonists to pay taxes but gave them no voice in Parliament.
Another complaint was quartering troops. The king forced colonists to house British soldiers in their personal homes without permission.
