Economics for kids

Grade 8 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we will explore how we make choices with money and how stories help us learn about economics.

Every day, we make choices about how to use our resources. In economics, we look at how people buy, sell, and share things. Even the characters in our favorite children's stories make economic choices!

Let's analyze a story like 'The Three Little Pigs' to understand choices. The first pig spent little time and money building a straw house, saving resources for play. We can represent this with decimals: he spent 0.10 (one-tenth) of his day working, leaving 0.90 (nine-tenths) for leisure.

Work: 0.10 (1/10) Play: 0.90 (9/10) Visualizing Decimals of a Day

When we read, we must establish a clear purpose, like finding how characters solve problems. In economics, we solve problems using math operations. For example, if a character buys 3 apples for $2.00 each, we represent this multiplication problem to find the total cost.

$2 $2 $2 3 groups of $2 = $6
✏️ Worked example

A character in a fable wants to buy 4 bags of magic seeds. Each bag costs $5.00. She starts with $25.00. Let's represent and solve this problem step-by-step to find out how much money she has left.

  1. Identify the purpose of our reading: We want to track the character's economic choices and final money.
  2. Set up a multiplication model to find the total cost of the seeds: 4 bags times $5.00 per bag.
  3. Solve the multiplication: 4 x 5 = 20. The total cost of the seeds is $20.00.
  4. Set up a subtraction model to find the remaining money: Starting money minus total cost.
  5. Solve the subtraction: $25.00 minus $20.00 equals $5.00.
  6. Write down the final answer: The character has $5.00 left.
