Supply & demand

Grade 8 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hi! I'm Studyfin, your tutor. Let's explore how buyers and sellers work together in a market!

Have you ever wondered why some items cost more than others? It all comes down to two big ideas: supply and demand. Supply is how much of something is available, while demand is how much people want it.

When the supply of an item is very low, but many people want to buy it, the price goes up. This is because people are willing to pay more to get a rare item.

SupplyPrice Up

On the other hand, if a seller has a huge supply of something but nobody wants to buy it, the price goes down. The seller lowers the price to convince people to buy.

✏️ Worked example

Let's plan a short story about a lemonade stand to explain supply and demand. First, we need to choose our genre, purpose, and audience. Then, we will draft the story showing how a hot day changes the price of lemonade.

  1. Step 1: Choose the genre. We will write a realistic fiction story. This genre makes economic concepts easy to understand through relatable characters.
  2. Step 2: Define the purpose and audience. Our purpose is to explain supply and demand. Our audience is middle school students, so we will use fun, simple language.
  3. Step 3: Establish the starting situation. Maya has a supply of 20 cups of lemonade on a cool morning. She sets the price at $1 per cup. Demand is low because it is chilly.
  4. Step 4: Introduce a change. The afternoon sun comes out, and the temperature rises to 90 degrees. Suddenly, a crowd of thirsty kids arrives. Demand is now extremely high!
  5. Step 5: Apply the economic rule. Since her supply of lemonade is limited and demand is high, Maya can raise her price to $2 per cup. The buyers are happy to pay more to cool down.
