Cultural diffusion & exchange

Grade 9 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hello! Today we will explore how ideas, technologies, and traditions travel across the globe to shape our daily lives.

Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group of people to another. This movement helps different societies share ideas, technologies, and customs.

learning

Trade and migration are the main ways culture spreads. When people move or trade goods, they also share their language, food, and music with new neighbors.

Culture A Culture B

Cultural exchange often flows in both directions, but it is rarely equal. The group with more economic or political power usually has the greater influence, and cultural change can also be forced rather than freely chosen.

Tradition A Tradition B Blending Cultures
✏️ Worked example

Analyze how the global popularity of sushi is an example of cultural diffusion.

  1. Identify the origin: Sushi is a traditional dish from Japan, made with seasoned rice and fish.
  2. Track the movement: Japanese immigrants and global travelers introduced sushi to other countries, like the United States.
  3. Observe the adaptation: Chefs in America adapted sushi to local tastes, creating the 'California Roll' with avocado and crab.
  4. Evaluate the result: Today, sushi is eaten worldwide, showing how a cultural food can spread and change to fit new societies.
