Future & conditional tenses

Grade 10 · Spanish · Free lesson

¡Hola! Let's explore how to talk about your dreams and what you will do in Spanish using two simple tenses.

The future tense in Spanish tells what will happen. To make it, you keep the whole verb and add endings like -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án. For example, 'hablaré' (I will speak) — ah-blah-REH.

The conditional tense tells what would happen under certain conditions. You use the exact same verb base but add endings like -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. For example, 'hablaría' (I would speak) — ah-blah-REE-ah.

INFINITIVE: hablar (to speak)FUTURE (Will)hablaréCONDITIONAL (Would)hablaría

Let us analyze how these two tenses change our meaning. If you say 'viajaré' (I will travel), you express a solid plan. If you say 'viajaría' (I would travel), you imply that you need something else first, like money or free time.

1Viajaré a España.I will travel to Spain. (Certain plan!)2Viajaría con más dinero.I would travel with more money. (Needs a condition!)
✏️ Worked example

Analyze the English sentence: 'If I had time, I would study Spanish.' Decide whether to translate 'would study' into the Spanish future tense or conditional tense, and write the correct form of the verb 'estudiar' (to study) — ess-too-dee-AHR.

  1. Identify the clue word in the English sentence. The word 'would' in 'would study' indicates a hypothetical action that depends on a condition (having time).
  2. Recall our grammatical rules: 'will' corresponds to the future tense, while 'would' corresponds to the conditional tense.
  3. Select the conditional tense for the verb 'estudiar' because the action is conditional on having free time.
  4. Find the subject of the action. The subject is 'I' (yo), so we need the 'I' ending for the conditional tense.
  5. Take the complete infinitive verb 'estudiar' and add the conditional ending '-ía' to the end.
  6. Combine them to get 'estudiaría' (I would study) — ess-too-dee-ah-REE-ah. This successfully completes our sentence: 'Si tuviera tiempo, estudiaría español.'
