In English, you say "I am studying" to show an action is happening this very second. Spanish does the exact same thing by combining the verb estar (to be) with a main verb that ends in a special helper sound.
To build this tense, you first conjugate the verb estar (to be) to match who is doing the action. For example, use estoy (I am) or está (he/she is). These helping verbs act like the anchor for your sentence.
Next, you add the gerund (the "-ing" word). For -ar verbs, drop the ending and add -ando, like hablando (speaking). For -er and -ir verbs, drop the ending and add -iendo, like comiendo (eating).
Let us analyze a real-world case: "The student is writing." We choose está because "student" is singular, and change escribir (to write) to escribiendo. This creates "El estudiante está escribiendo," which perfectly describes an ongoing action.
Translate the sentence "We are eating (comer) right now" into Spanish using the present progressive.
- Identify the subject, which is "We" (nosotros).
- Conjugate the helping verb "estar" for "nosotros" to get "estamos" (we are).
- Take the action verb "comer" (to eat) and identify it as an -er verb.
- Drop the -er ending from "comer" to get the stem "com-".
- Add the -iendo ending for -er verbs to the stem, creating "comiendo" (eating).
- Combine both parts to make the final correct sentence: "Nosotros estamos comiendo" (We are eating).
