When you read a new language, you do not need to know every single word. Instead, look for cognates, which are words that look and sound like English words.
For example, the Spanish word 'parque (park)' looks almost exactly like its English match. By finding these familiar words, you can quickly guess the main topic of a sentence.
Next, pay attention to context clues like verbs and adjectives. In the sentence 'El parque es grande (The park is big)', the word 'grande (grahn-deh)' tells us about the size.
Analyze this Spanish sentence and find the main activity: 'Sofía corre en el parque grande los sábados (Sofía runs in the big park on Saturdays)'.
- Find the subject of the sentence. The name 'Sofía' is the subject who is doing the action.
- Look for the verb or action word. 'Corre (COH-rreh)' sounds like 'current' or 'course' and means 'runs'. This tells us what Sofía is doing.
- Identify the location using the cognate 'parque (park)' and the adjective 'grande (big)'. She is at a large park.
- Look for time clues. 'Los sábados (los SAH-bah-dose)' means 'on Saturdays'.
- Combine all these facts to justify your conclusion: Sofía's main activity is running in a large park every Saturday.
