The extra letter in Spanish is the letter Ñ. It sounds like the 'ny' in the word onion. We say it like 'enye'.

N

In Spanish, the letter H is always silent! When you see 'hola' (hello), you do not say the 'H'. You say it like 'OH-lah'.

HSilent!hola = "OH-lah"
✏️ Worked example

How do we pronounce the Spanish word 'piñata' (piñata) step by step?

  1. Look at the first syllable: 'pi'. In Spanish, the letter 'i' sounds like 'ee'. So, 'pi' sounds like 'pee'.
  2. Look at the second syllable: 'ña'. The letter 'ñ' sounds like 'ny'. So, 'ña' sounds like 'nyah'.
  3. Look at the last syllable: 'ta'. The letter 'a' sounds like 'ah'. So, 'ta' sounds like 'tah'.
  4. Put it all together! You say 'pee-NYAH-tah'.
