Clothing (La ropa)

Grade 4 · Spanish · Free lesson

¡Hola! Let's learn how to talk about the clothes we wear every day in Spanish!

In Spanish, the word for clothing is la ropa (lah ROH-pah). We use different words for each item, like a shirt or a hat.

Let us look at a shirt. In Spanish, we call it la camiseta (lah kah-mee-SEH-tah). It has a feminine article, 'la', because the word ends in 'a'.

la camiseta (shirt)

Now let us look at a hat. In Spanish, we call it el sombrero (el sohm-BREH-roh). It has a masculine article, 'el', because the word ends in 'o'.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are packing for a sunny day. You want to wear a shirt and a hat. How do you say 'the shirt' and 'the hat' in Spanish?

  1. First, recall the Spanish word for shirt. It is 'camiseta'.
  2. Next, find the matching article. Since 'camiseta' ends in 'a', it is feminine. We use 'la' to get 'la camiseta'.
  3. Then, recall the Spanish word for hat. It is 'sombrero'.
  4. Next, find its matching article. Since 'sombrero' ends in 'o', it is masculine. We use 'el' to get 'el sombrero'.
  5. Finally, put them together! You are packing 'la camiseta' (the shirt) and 'el sombrero' (the hat).
