Greetings & introductions (Saludos)

Grade 4 · Spanish · Free lesson

In Spanish there are warm, friendly ways to say hello and goodbye. Let's learn a few you can use right away!

The most common greeting is hola (hello). You can say it any time of day, to anyone!

Greet by the time of day: buenos días (good morning), buenas tardes (good afternoon), and buenas noches (good evening / good night).

To ask how someone is, say ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?). You can answer bien (well / good) or muy bien (very well).

To say goodbye: adiós (goodbye), hasta luego (see you later), and hasta mañana (see you tomorrow).

✏️ Worked example

Marta meets her friend Luis in the morning. How could they greet each other?

  1. Marta says: «¡Hola, Luis! Buenos días.» (Hello, Luis! Good morning.)
  2. Luis answers: «¡Hola, Marta! ¿Cómo estás?» (Hello, Marta! How are you?)
  3. Marta replies: «Muy bien, gracias.» (Very well, thank you.)
  4. When they leave, they say: «¡Hasta luego!» (See you later!)
