To ask "What time is it?" in Spanish, we say: ¿Qué hora es? (kay OH-rah ess). It literally means "What hour is it?" in English.
When the hour is one, we say: Es la una (ess lah OO-nah). This means "It is one o'clock." We use "la" because "hora" is a feminine word.
For any hour other than one, we use: Son las (sohn lahss). For example, to say "It is two o'clock," we say: Son las dos (sohn lahss dohss).
✏️ Worked example
Imagine your clock shows 4:00. How do we say "It is four o'clock" in Spanish?
- First, check if the hour is one. The hour is four, which is more than one.
- Since the hour is not one, we must start our sentence with "Son las" instead of "Es la".
- Next, find the Spanish word for the number four. Four in Spanish is "cuatro" (KWAH-troh).
- Put the two parts together to get: "Son las cuatro". This means "It is four o'clock!"
