In Spanish, we ask about the weather by saying: ¿Qué tiempo hace? (How is the weather? — keh tee-EHM-poh AH-seh). To answer, we often use the word hace (it makes/is — AH-seh) followed by a weather word.
When the sun is shining, we say hace sol (it is sunny — AH-seh sohl). Look at this happy, shining sun!
When water falls from the sky, we say está lloviendo (it is raining — ehs-TAH yoh-vee-EHN-doh). Watch the raindrops fall down to the ground!
Now let's apply this! Imagine you look out the window and see trees swaying violently and leaves flying. You would say hace viento (it is windy — AH-seh bee-EHN-toh). You can spot the clues in the weather to choose the right Spanish phrase!
Your friend Maria looks out the window in Madrid. She sees big, white, fluffy shapes covering the blue sky, but no rain is falling. Help Maria describe the weather in Spanish by choosing between 'Hace sol' and 'Está nublado' (It is cloudy).
- First, look at the clues. Maria sees big, white, fluffy shapes in the sky.
- Identify what those shapes are. Fluffy shapes in the sky are clouds!
- Recall your Spanish weather words. 'Hace sol' means 'it is sunny.' 'Está nublado' means 'it is cloudy.'
- Since there are clouds covering the sky, Maria should say: 'Está nublado' (ehs-TAH noo-BLAH-doh).
