In Spanish, we use special words to ask questions, just like we do in English. We call these 'palabras interrogativas' (question words). Notice that every Spanish question starts with an upside-down question mark ¿ and ends with a normal one ?.
The word '¿Quién?' (kee-EHN) means 'Who?'. We use it when we want to ask about a person. For example, '¿Quién es ella?' (Who is she?) helps us find out who someone is.
The word '¿Qué?' (keh) means 'What?'. We use it to ask about things or actions. For example, '¿Qué es esto?' (What is this?) helps us learn about an object in front of us.
The word '¿Dónde?' (DOHN-deh) means 'Where?'. We use it to find a place or location. For example, '¿Dónde está el baño?' (Where is the bathroom?) is a very helpful question to know!
Imagine you see a cute dog in the park. You want to ask your friend, 'What is the dog's name?' in Spanish. How do you do it step by step?
- First, find the question word for 'What'. In Spanish, we use '¿Cómo?' (COH-moh) to ask for a name. It literally means 'How', as in 'How is the dog called?'.
- Next, remember to start your sentence with an upside-down question mark: ¿.
- Then, add the Spanish words for 'is called the dog'. That is 'se llama el perro'.
- Now, put them together: '¿Cómo se llama el perro?'.
- Finally, add a normal question mark at the very end: ?.
- Awesome! You just wrote: '¿Cómo se llama el perro?' (What is the dog's name?).
