In Spanish, letters almost always make the same sound. This makes spelling and reading very easy! For example, the letter 'a' always sounds like 'ah', as in the word 'casa' (house).
The special Spanish letter ñ (enye) has a wavy line on top called a tilde. It makes a 'ny' sound, like the middle of the English word 'onion'. You hear it in 'niño' (boy).

Let's practice saying the Spanish word 'piñata' (colorful party toy filled with candy) step by step.
Find the first part: 'pi'. The letter 'p' sounds like English, and 'i' sounds like 'ee'. So, 'pi' sounds like 'pee'.
Look at the middle part: 'ña'. Remember, 'ñ' has that 'ny' sound, and 'a' sounds like 'ah'. This part sounds like 'nyah'.
Look at the last part: 'ta'. The 't' is soft, and the 'a' sounds like 'ah'. This part sounds like 'tah'.
Put all three parts together: pee-nyah-tah!
Say it out loud fast: piñata! You just pronounced a Spanish word perfectly!
