Clothing (La ropa)

Grade 6 · Spanish · Free lesson

¡Hola! Welcome! Today we are going to learn how to talk about the clothes we wear every day in Spanish.

In Spanish, the word for clothing is la ropa (lah ROH-pah). Just like in English, we have different words for shirts, pants, and shoes. Let's learn some basic words first!

Let's look at the shirt. In Spanish, a shirt is called la camisa (lah kah-MEE-sah). Notice that 'la' means 'the' for feminine words. Look at how this blue shirt pops up!

la camisa (the shirt)

Now let's look at the shoes! In Spanish, shoes are called los zapatos (lohs zah-PAH-tohs). Since 'los' is plural, it means we are talking about more than one shoe.

los zapatos (the shoes)

Why do some words start with 'la' and others with 'los' or 'el'? Spanish nouns have gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). We must match our articles to our clothes!

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are packing for a sunny day. You want to say 'the shirt' and 'the shoes' in Spanish. How do we choose the correct matching words step-by-step?

  1. Identify the first clothing item: shirt. In Spanish, this word is 'camisa'.
  2. Check the gender of 'camisa'. It ends with 'a', which means it is feminine. It is also singular (just one shirt).
  3. Pick the singular feminine article for 'the', which is 'la'. Put them together to get 'la camisa'.
  4. Identify the second item: shoes. In Spanish, this word is 'zapatos'.
  5. Check the gender and number of 'zapatos'. It is masculine and plural (ends in 'os').
  6. Pick the plural masculine article for 'the', which is 'los'. Put them together to get 'los zapatos'.
