In Spanish, we do not capitalize the days of the week or the months. We start them with a lowercase letter unless they are the very first word in a sentence.
Let's look at the days of the week, starting with Monday. They are: lunes (Monday), martes (Tuesday), miércoles (Wednesday), jueves (Thursday), viernes (Friday), sábado (Saturday), and domingo (Sunday).
Next, let's learn the four seasons, called las estaciones (the seasons). They are: el invierno (winter), la primavera (spring), el verano (summer), and el otoño (autumn/fall). Notice that they use 'el' or 'la' in front of them!
Translate this sentence into Spanish: 'Today is Thursday and it is winter.' Use 'Hoy es' for 'Today is' and 'y es' for 'and it is'.
- Step 1: Look up the Spanish word for Thursday. Thursday is 'jueves'. Remember to use a lowercase 'j'.
- Step 2: Translate 'Today is Thursday'. This becomes 'Hoy es jueves'.
- Step 3: Look up the Spanish word for winter. Winter is 'el invierno'.
- Step 4: Combine the parts with 'y' (and). Write your final sentence: 'Hoy es jueves y es invierno.'
