House & rooms (La casa)

Grade 6 · Spanish · Free lesson

¡Hola! I am Studyfin, your Spanish tutor. Today we will explore the different rooms of a house in Spanish!

Every house is special. In Spanish, we call a house 'la casa' (lah KAH-sah). Inside 'la casa', we find different rooms called 'los cuartos' (lohs KWAR-tohs).

Let us start with 'la cocina' (lah koh-SEE-nah), which means the kitchen. This is where we cook delicious food! Next is 'el comedor' (ehl koh-meh-DOR), the dining room where we eat.

la cocina (kitchen)

Now let us look at where we rest. 'El dormitorio' (ehl dor-mee-TOH-ree-oh) is the bedroom. This is where you sleep in your cozy bed, which we call 'la cama' (lah KAH-mah).

We also have 'el baño' (ehl BAH-nyoh) for the bathroom. Note the special letter ñ in 'baño' which sounds like the 'ny' in onion! Finally, 'la sala' (lah SAH-lah) is the living room where we relax and talk.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are showing a new friend around your home. You want to point out the kitchen first, and then point out your bedroom. How do you plan and say these two sentences in Spanish?

  1. Step 1: Identify the Spanish word for kitchen. We learned that kitchen is 'la cocina' (lah koh-SEE-nah).
  2. Step 2: Put it into a simple sentence. To say 'This is the kitchen', we say 'Esta es la cocina' (EHS-tah ehs lah koh-SEE-nah).
  3. Step 3: Identify the Spanish word for bedroom. We learned that bedroom is 'el dormitorio' (ehl dor-mee-TOH-ree-oh).
  4. Step 4: Put it into a simple sentence. To say 'This is the bedroom', we say 'Este es el dormitorio' (EHS-teh ehs ehl dor-mee-TOH-ree-oh). Notice we use 'Este' for masculine rooms and 'Esta' for feminine rooms!
  5. Step 5: Practice saying both sentences aloud to your friend: 'Esta es la cocina. Este es el dormitorio.'
