Nouns: gender & articles (género y artículos)

Grade 6 · Spanish · Free lesson

¡Hola! Welcome to Spanish class. Today we will learn how Spanish nouns have gender and how to choose the right article!

In English, we just say 'the book' or 'the table'. But in Spanish, every single noun is either masculine (boy) or feminine (girl). This is called grammatical gender.

letters

Most Spanish nouns that end in -o are masculine. We use the word 'el' (the) in front of them, like 'el libro' (the book). Most nouns that end in -a are feminine. We use 'la' (the) in front of them, like 'la mesa' (the table).

Why does this matter? It matters because the article 'el' or 'la' must match the ending of the noun. Let's compare: 'el gato' (the male cat) uses 'el' because it ends in -o. 'La gata' (the female cat) uses 'la' because it ends in -a.

✏️ Worked example

Figure out the correct article ('el' or 'la') for the Spanish word 'perro' (dog) and 'silla' (chair).

  1. Look at the ending of the first word: 'perro'. It ends with the letter -o.
  2. Since words ending in -o are usually masculine, we need the masculine article. The masculine article for 'the' is 'el'. So, we write 'el perro' (the dog).
  3. Look at the ending of the second word: 'silla'. It ends with the letter -a.
  4. Since words ending in -a are usually feminine, we need the feminine article. The feminine article for 'the' is 'la'. So, we write 'la silla' (the chair).
