¡Hola! Let's learn how to talk about what we do every day in Spanish using regular -ar verbs.
In Spanish, action words are called verbs. Many of these verbs end in the letters -ar, like hablar (to speak) — pronounced ah-BLAR.
To say who is doing the action, we chop off the -ar ending. This leaves us with the stem, like habl-. Then we glue on a new ending!
For "yo (I)", we add the letter "o". So, "yo hablo" means "I speak". For "tú (you)", we add "as" to get "tú hablas".
✏️ Worked example
Change the verb cantar (to sing) — pronounced kahn-TAR — to say "I sing" in Spanish.
- Find the action word we want to change: cantar (to sing).
- Chop off the ending -ar. This leaves you with the stem: cant-.
- Identify who is doing the action. We want to say "I sing" which uses "yo (I)".
- Recall the ending for "yo", which is "o".
- Glue the "o" to the stem to get "canto". Yo canto means I sing!
