In Spanish, we use special question words just like we do in English. Every Spanish question word has a written accent mark to show it is a question.
We always use an upside-down question mark ¿ at the very start of our question. We put a regular question mark ? at the end.
Let us learn two important words: ¿Quién? (Who? - pronounced kee-EHN) and ¿Qué? (What? - pronounced keh). We use ¿Quién? for people and ¿Qué? for things.
✏️ Worked example
Your new classmate, Mateo, is holding a mystery object. You want to ask him two things: 1) "Who is your teacher?" and 2) "What is that?" Let's figure out how to say these in Spanish!
First, look at the first question: "Who is your teacher?". The question is about a person (the teacher).
Choose the word for "Who", which is ¿Quién? (kee-EHN). Remember to write the accent mark on the 'e'!
Combine it with the rest of the sentence: "¿Quién es tu maestro?" (Who is your teacher?). Notice the upside-down question mark at the start!
Now, look at the second question: "What is that?". This question is about an object.
Choose the word for "What", which is ¿Qué? (keh). Remember the accent mark on the 'e'!
Combine it to make: "¿Qué es eso?" (What is that?). Excellent job!
