In English, we use words like 'I', 'you', 'he', and 'she' to avoid repeating names. In Spanish, we do the exact same thing with words called subject pronouns (los pronombres).
Let us look at 'I' and 'you'. In Spanish, 'yo' (yoh) means 'I', and 'tú' (too) means 'you' when talking to a friend. Watch how we point to ourselves for 'yo' and to a friend for 'tú'!
Now, let us compare talking about a boy versus a girl. We use 'él' (ehl) for 'he' and 'ella' (eh-yah) for 'she'. Notice the accent mark on 'él'—it is very important because without it, 'el' just means 'the'!
Imagine you want to talk about your friend Sofia. Which Spanish subject pronoun should you use to replace her name?
- First, identify who you are talking about. In this case, it is Sofia.
- Next, think about who Sofia is. She is one person, and she is a girl (female).
- Then, look at your choices: 'yo' (I), 'tú' (you), 'él' (he), or 'ella' (she).
- Since Sofia is a single girl we are talking about, we choose 'ella' (she).
- Excellent! You can now say 'Ella es mi amiga' (She is my friend) instead of repeating her name.
