In Spanish, the word for house is 'la casa' (lah KAH-sah). Just like in English, a house is made up of different rooms where we live, eat, and sleep.
Let us look at two main rooms. We sleep in 'el dormitorio' (el door-mee-TOR-ee-oh) which means the bedroom. We cook delicious food in 'la cocina' (lah ko-SEE-nah) which is the kitchen.
Now let us add 'el baño' (el BAH-nyoh) for the bathroom and 'the living room' which is 'la sala' (lah SAH-lah). Notice how some words use 'el' (masculine) and others use 'la' (feminine). This is called gender agreement!
Imagine you want to tell a friend that you study in the bedroom and watch TV in the living room. How do we build these two simple sentences in Spanish step by step?
- Find the Spanish verb for 'I study'. This is 'yo estudio' (yoh eh-STOO-dee-oh).
- Find the word for 'in the bedroom'. 'In the' is 'en el' and 'bedroom' is 'dormitorio'. So we write 'en el dormitorio'.
- Put the first sentence together: 'Yo estudio en el dormitorio' (I study in the bedroom).
- Next, find the verb for 'I watch TV'. This is 'yo miro la televisión' (yoh MEE-roh lah teh-leh-bee-SYOHN).
- Find the word for 'in the living room'. 'Living room' is feminine, so 'in the' becomes 'en la'. We write 'en la sala'.
- Put the second sentence together: 'Yo miro la televisión en la sala' (I watch television in the living room).
