¡Hola! Today we will learn how to talk about actions in Spanish. We will look at verbs that end in -er and -ir!
In Spanish, verbs change their endings to show who is doing the action. We call this conjugation. First, we start with the base verb, like comer (to eat) or vivir (to live). We chop off the -er or -ir ending to get the stem.
Once you have the stem, you add new endings! For -er verbs like comer (to eat), the endings match the person. For 'I' (yo), we add -o to make como (I eat). For 'you' (tú), we add -es to make comes (you eat).
-ir verbs like vivir (to live) are very similar! They use the exact same endings as -er verbs for most people. For example, yo vivo (I live) and tú vives (you live) use -o and -es. They only differ for 'we' (nosotros), where we use -imos.
Conjugate the verb escribir (to write) for the subject nosotros (we).
- Find the infinitive verb, which is escribir (to write) — ehs-cree-BEER.
- Identify the ending. It is an -ir verb, so we chop off the -ir to find the stem: escrib-.
- Identify the subject. The subject is nosotros (we) — noh-SOH-trohs.
- Find the correct ending for -ir verbs with nosotros. The ending is -imos.
- Attach the ending to the stem. This gives us escribimos (we write) — ehs-cree-BEE-mohs.
