In English, you say "I like the book." But in Spanish, the word "gustar" (goos-TAHR) works backward! You actually say "The book pleases me." The thing you like is the real subject of the sentence.
Since the thing you like is doing the action, the verb has to match it. If you like one thing, use "gusta" (GOOS-tah). If you like multiple things, use "gustan" (GOOS-tahn)!
To show WHO likes the item, we put a special helper word first. We use "me" (meh) for me, and "te" (teh) for you. "Me gusta" means "I like" and "te gusta" means "you like"!
Translate the sentence "You like the apples" into Spanish. The Spanish word for "apples" is "las manzanas" (lahs mahn-ZAH-nahs).
- Find the helper word for 'you'. The helper word for 'you' is 'te' (teh).
- Look at what is being liked: 'las manzanas' (the apples). This is plural because there is more than one apple.
- Choose the correct form of the verb. Since 'las manzanas' is plural, we must use 'gustan' (GOOS-tahn).
- Put the pieces together in the correct order: Helper word + Verb + Item.
- Your final correct Spanish sentence is: 'Te gustan las manzanas' (You like the apples).
