In Spanish, action words are called verbs. Verbs that end in '-ar' are the largest group of verbs. To use them, we first chop off the '-ar' ending to find the starting stem.
Once we have the stem, we glue on a new ending. Each ending tells us who is doing the action. For example, we add '-o' when talking about yourself: 'yo hablo' (I speak).
Let us compare how endings change for different people. We use '-as' for 'tú' (you), '-a' for 'él/ella' (he/she), and '-amos' for 'nosotros' (we). Notice how the starting stem 'habl-' always stays exactly the same!
Conjugate the verb 'cantar' (to sing) — pronounced kahn-TAHR — for the subject 'nosotros' (we).
- Identify the starting verb: 'cantar' (to sing).
- Chop off the '-ar' ending to find the stem: 'cant-'.
- Identify the subject: 'nosotros' (we).
- Recall the correct ending for 'nosotros', which is '-amos'.
- Glue the stem and the new ending together: 'cant-' + '-amos' = 'cantamos' (we sing).
