In English, we use words like 'I', 'you', 'he', and 'she' to show who is doing an action. These are called subject pronouns, and Spanish has them too!
Let's look at talking about yourself. In Spanish, 'yo' (yoh) means 'I'. Unlike the English word 'I', you only capitalize 'yo' if it starts a sentence.
When talking to one friend, use 'tú' (too) for 'you'. If you are talking about a boy, use 'él' (el) for 'he'. For a girl, use 'ella' (EH-yah) for 'she'. Notice the accent mark on 'él'!
To talk about a group of people, we have 'nosotros' (noh-SOH-trohs) for 'we'. For 'they', use 'ellos' (EH-yohs) for a group of boys or mixed genders, and 'ellas' (EH-yahs) for girls only.
Imagine you want to translate these three English sentences into Spanish. Which Spanish subject pronouns will you use for each underlined word? 1. *She* is my friend. 2. *We* love soccer. 3. *They* (a group of girls) study Spanish.
- Step 1: Look at the first sentence. The pronoun is 'She'. In Spanish, 'she' translates directly to 'ella'.
- Step 2: Look at the second sentence. The pronoun is 'We'. In Spanish, the word for 'we' is 'nosotros'.
- Step 3: Look at the third sentence. The pronoun is 'They', and we are told they are a group of girls. This means we must use the feminine form, which is 'ellas'.
- Step 4: Combine your answers! The correct pronouns are 'ella' (she), 'nosotros' (we), and 'ellas' (they - girls).
