To talk about what you are going to do, Spanish uses a simple three-step formula. You do not need to learn a new, complex tense! We just combine the verb 'ir' (to go), the word 'a' (to), and any action verb in its original form.
First, you must conjugate the verb 'ir' (to go) to match the person doing the action. For example, 'yo voy' (I am going), 'tú vas' (you are going), or 'nosotros vamos' (we are going). Next, always add the helper word 'a' (to) right after it.
Finally, add your action verb in its infinitive form. An infinitive is a verb that has not been changed yet and still ends in -ar, -er, or -ir, like 'estudiar' (to study). This creates a complete plan, like 'voy a estudiar' (I am going to study).
Translate this English sentence into Spanish using the near future formula: "They are going to write a book."
- Analyze the subject of the sentence: "They" (ellos/ellas).
- Conjugate the verb 'ir' (to go) to match the subject "ellos". The correct form of 'ir' for "they" is 'van'.
- Add the helper word 'a' right after the conjugated verb to get 'van a'.
- Find the Spanish infinitive for the action "to write". The verb is 'escribir'.
