Grade 5 · History · Free lesson

Welcome to Ancient Rome! Let's learn how a small town grew into a huge empire.

Ancient Rome started as a small town in Italy over 2,000 years ago. It grew next to the Tiber River. The river gave people fresh water and good farmland.

At first, Rome was a republic. This means citizens voted for leaders to make laws. People met in a large open space called the Forum to talk.

VOTE

Romans were famous for building strong roads. These stone roads connected distant cities. They helped armies travel quickly across the lands.

Today, we still see Roman ideas around us. Their language, legal ideas, and building styles inspired many modern countries.
