Long ago, powerful kingdoms grew rich and strong in Africa. The kingdoms of Mali and Songhai ruled the grassy plains of West Africa, while Great Zimbabwe ruled in the south.
Mali and Songhai became rich by trading gold for salt. They controlled the busy trade routes across the hot Sahara Desert, making their cities famous for learning and wealth.
Further south, Great Zimbabwe was famous for its giant stone buildings. The builders did not use any mortar or glue, yet the massive stone walls still stand strong today!
Let us compare how West African kingdoms and Southern African kingdoms used their local resources to become powerful. Think about Mali and Great Zimbabwe.
- First, look at Mali. They had lots of gold mines but needed salt to stay healthy in the hot weather. They used their gold to trade with people from the north who had salt.
- Next, look at Great Zimbabwe. They lived in a hilly area with lots of granite stone. They also raised large herds of cattle and traded gold with cities on the coast.
- Now, compare their strategies. Mali got rich by controlling trade routes across the desert. Great Zimbabwe got rich by farming cattle and building a safe, strong stone city.
- Finally, we see that both kingdoms used what they had nearby—gold, trade routes, or stone—to build strong societies that lasted for hundreds of years!
