Crusades & medieval Mediterranean

Grade 7 · History · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your history tutor. Today we will explore how three major events changed Europe forever and helped end the Middle Ages!

For hundreds of years, medieval Europe relied on feudalism. Kings shared power with lords, and poor peasants worked the land. But three huge events—the Crusades, the Black Death, and the Hundred Years' War—broke this system down.

geography

The Crusades were holy wars that sent European knights to the Mediterranean. This opened up trade routes, brought new ideas to Europe, and made kings stronger while weakening local lords.

Next came the Black Death, a terrible plague. It killed about one-third of Europe's people, creating a huge shortage of workers. Because workers were scarce, peasants could finally demand higher wages and more freedom.

Fewer Workers = Higher Wages!

Finally, the Hundred Years' War between England and France changed how wars were fought. Powerful longbows and gunpowder made expensive knights on horseback useless, which took away the military power of local lords.

✏️ Worked example

Explain how the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War worked together to end the power of feudal lords in medieval Europe.

  1. Identify the core power of feudal lords: they controlled the land (which peasants worked for free) and they provided military protection as knights.
  2. Analyze the impact of the Black Death: with fewer peasants alive, survivors demanded wages. Lords lost their free labor and economic control.
  3. Analyze the impact of the Hundred Years' War: new weapons like longbows and cannons meant knights and stone castles could no longer protect lords.
  4. Connect the two events: the Black Death took away the lords' wealth, while the war took away their military usefulness.
  5. Conclude how this ended feudalism: without cheap labor or military dominance, the feudal system collapsed, giving rise to strong central kings.
