Industrial revolution

Grade 7 · History · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your tutor. Let's explore how big machines changed our world forever!

In the late 1700s, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain. People stopped making goods by hand at home and started using big, coal-powered machines in large factories.

This shift caused huge economic changes. Factories could make goods much faster and cheaper, which helped businesses grow and created many new jobs.

Faster Production & Economic Growth

It also brought major social changes. Millions of families moved from quiet farms to crowded cities to work in factories, which created the modern working class.

Farm City Social Change: Moving to Cities

Finally, political changes followed. As cities grew, governments had to pass new laws to make factories safer, limit working hours, and protect young children.

✏️ Worked example

Explain how the invention of the steam engine led to political, economic, and social changes.

  1. Step 1: Identify the economic change. The steam engine powered big machines, which allowed factories to produce goods quickly and boost trade.
  2. Step 2: Identify the social change. People moved from rural farms to crowded cities to work near these steam-powered factories.
  3. Step 3: Identify the political change. Because of crowded and unsafe city conditions, citizens demanded that the government make safety laws.
  4. Step 4: Connect them together. Explain that one machine caused a chain reaction that changed how people worked, lived, and made laws.
