Long ago, humans stopped hunting and started farming. This big change is called the Neolithic Revolution. Farming meant people had extra food, so they could stay in one place and build permanent homes.
With extra food, people built the first civilizations. These societies had five special traits: cities, organized government, art and writing, different types of jobs, and shared social groups.
The earliest civilizations started in river valleys like Mesopotamia. These river cultures grew so strong that they influenced later classical empires, like Greece and Rome, by sharing ideas like written laws and farming tools.
Explain how the invention of farming in Mesopotamia led to the creation of written laws.
- Step 1: Identify the starting point. Farming allowed people to grow extra food and live in one permanent place.
- Step 2: Connect to population growth. Because there was plenty of food, more people moved to the area, and the first crowded cities grew.
- Step 3: Analyze the conflict. With thousands of people living close together, arguments broke out over land, water, and property.
- Step 4: Explain the solution. Leaders needed a fair way to keep order, so they wrote down official rules, like Hammurabi's Code, for everyone to see.
