Grade 8 · History · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we will explore how a powerful civilization grew in the middle of a desert.

Ancient Egypt grew along the Nile River in northern Africa thousands of years ago. Every year, the river flooded its banks and brought fresh water to the dry land.

When the floodwaters pulled back, they left behind a layer of dark, rich soil called silt. Farmers planted crops in this fertile soil, creating a reliable food supply for millions.

Ancient Egyptians organized their society under powerful kings called pharaohs. Below the pharaoh were government officials, priests, craftsmen, and the farmers who grew the food.

✏️ Worked example

Let's analyze why the Nile River was essential for human settlement in Ancient Egypt.

  1. First, examine the geography: Egypt is mostly covered by dry desert sand.
  2. Next, observe the river's action: The Nile River floods every summer and leaves behind wet, fertile silt.
  3. Then, connect cause and effect: The silt allows farmers to grow grain and vegetables consistently.
  4. Finally, make a conclusion: Reliable food let people build permanent towns, trade goods, and create a strong society.
