Industrial revolution

Grade 8 · History · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we are going exploring to see how powered machines and factories changed our entire world.

In the late 1700s, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain. Instead of making goods by hand at home, people started using steam-powered machines in large factories.

This shift led to massive economic changes. Factories could make goods much faster and cheaper, which created new businesses and boosted global trade.

Economic Growth

It also brought huge social changes. Millions of people moved from quiet farms to crowded cities to find factory work, a process called urbanization.

Moving to the Cities

Finally, political changes followed. As the working class grew, citizens demanded better working conditions, leading to new labor laws and voting rights.

✏️ Worked example

Explain how the invention of the steam engine led to social changes in 19th-century Britain.

  1. Identify the technology: The steam engine powered large factory machines and trains.
  2. Connect to work: Since machines were too big for homes, workers had to gather in central factories.
  3. Explain the movement: Families left their rural farms to move near these factories in the cities.
  4. Describe the social result: This rapid movement created crowded cities, which eventually forced governments to pass safety and housing laws.
