Grade 9 · History · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we will explore how our world became connected through the internet after 1990.

After the Cold War ended in 1991, the world entered a new era. Instead of division, countries began to connect faster than ever before. This rapid connection is called globalization.

The biggest driver of this change was the World Wide Web, which became public in 1991. Computers stopped being simple calculators and became windows to global knowledge.

The World Connects

By the late 1990s, the internet changed how we shop, share news, and talk to friends. We transitioned from a physical economy to an information economy.

✏️ Worked example

Analyze how the rise of the internet changed daily life for a teenager in 1995 compared to today. Use evidence to justify which era had more access to global perspectives.

  1. Identify the core differences in technology. In 1995, dial-up internet was slow, and people used landline phones. Today, smartphones give us instant access to the web.
  2. Analyze the sources of information. In 1995, a teen relied on local libraries, printed newspapers, and network TV. Today, a teen can read social media posts from people worldwide in real time.
  3. Evaluate the level of global perspective. While 1995 had international news, it was filtered through a few major media companies.
  4. Formulate a conclusion based on this evidence. Today's teenager has far more direct access to global perspectives because digital platforms allow everyday citizens worldwide to share their stories instantly without filters.
