The beat is the steady heartbeat of a song. It stays the same, just like your own heartbeat.
Rhythm is different. It is the pattern of short and long sounds that we hear.
We can use icons to show notes. A high icon means a high sound, and a low icon means a low sound.
✏️ Worked example
Look at a song with two sounds. The first sound is high. The second sound is low. How do we draw this with icons?
- First, look at the pitch of the first sound. It is high, so we need a high shape.
- Next, draw a star high up on the left side of your paper.
- Then, look at the second sound. It is low, so we need a low shape.
- Draw a second star lower down on the right side of your paper.
- Finally, point to each star from left to right as you sing the high and low sounds!
