Hi there! Today we will explore how beats, rhythms, and simple melodies make music come alive.
The beat is the steady heartbeat of a song. It stays the same, just like your walking steps. Rhythm is different because it can be fast or slow, matching the words we sing.
We can use pictures to show how long a sound lasts. This is called iconic representation. A big circle can show a steady beat, while small lines show a fast rhythm.
Melodies are made of high and low sounds. We can use icons to show a three-tone melody. A high star means a high note, and a low star means a low note.
✏️ Worked example
Let us look at a simple three-tone melody. We want to identify the high, middle, and low notes by looking at their picture shapes.
- Look at the three shapes placed on the screen from left to right.
- Notice the height of each shape. The first shape is placed high up.
- The second shape is placed lower down at the bottom of the screen.
- The third shape is placed right in the middle.
- We can explain that this melody goes High, then Low, and ends in the Middle!
