Every musical instrument has its own unique voice. This special sound quality is called timbre. Timbre is what helps you tell a flute apart from a drum.
Instruments are grouped into families based on how they make sound. The brass family uses metal tubes and buzzing lips to make bright, bold sounds.
The percussion family makes sound when you shake, scrape, or strike them. Playing classroom instruments like a shaker or a drum is a fun way to make music with friends!
✏️ Worked example
Let us practice sorting instruments! Imagine you hear a bright, metallic horn and a deep, wooden drum. How do we identify their instrument families using their unique timbre?
- First, listen closely to the sound of the first instrument. It sounds bright, loud, and metallic.
- Next, think about how it is played. The musician blows air through a metal tube. This tells us it belongs to the brass family.
- Now, listen to the second instrument. It makes a deep, booming sound when struck with a mallet.
- Finally, match the action to the family. Since we strike it to make a sound, it belongs to the percussion family!
