Music has a beat, just like your heartbeat. We measure these beats using notes and rests in a set amount of time. Today, we will look at 4/4 time, which means we count four beats in each music bar.
A whole note is a circle that looks like an egg. It is very long and lasts for four full beats. A whole rest is a little box that hangs down from a line, and it means four beats of complete silence.
We can also pack quick sounds into a single beat. Four sixteenth notes are joined together by two thick bars at the top. They sound like a fast chatter, fitting all four notes into just one beat!
Let us build a rhythm pattern in 4/4 time that equals exactly four beats. We want to use one set of sixteenth notes, two quarter notes, and some silent rests. How do we write this and check our math?
- First, we write down our target. A 4/4 meter means we need exactly four beats in our bar.
- Next, we choose our notes. We write one set of four sixteenth notes. This group equals one beat.
- Then, we add two quarter notes. Each quarter note gets one beat. That adds two more beats to our count.
- Now, we add up our beats: 1 beat (sixteenth notes) + 2 beats (quarter notes) = 3 beats.
- We need one more beat to make four. We write a one-beat quarter rest to make a moment of silence.
- Finally, we double check our math: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4. Our rhythm pattern is complete and correct!
