A scale is a set of musical notes played in order. They go up or down like a ladder. The distance between each step creates a pattern.
Major scales sound bright and happy. They use a pattern of steps that makes us feel cheerful. Think of a sunny day in a park!
Minor scales sound dark, sad, or mysterious. By lowering just a few notes, the whole mood changes. It sounds like a rainy afternoon.
✏️ Worked example
Let us turn a happy three-note melody into a sad, mysterious melody. Our starting notes are C, E, and G.
- First, play the notes C, E, and G. This is a bright, happy major sound.
- Next, find the middle note, which is E. This note decides if the scale is major or minor.
- Then, lower that middle note by one half-step. On a piano, you move to the black key just to the left of E. This new note is E-flat.
- Finally, play the new notes together: C, E-flat, and G. Listen to how the mood changes from happy to sad!
