Music has a heartbeat called a beat. We use different notes to show how long a sound lasts. In a 4/4 meter, each measure has four beats.
A whole note looks like an empty circle. It is very long and lasts for four full beats. A whole rest is a upside-down hat that means four beats of silence.
Sixteenth notes are super fast! Four of them join together with two beams across the top. All four sixteenth notes fit into just one single beat.
✏️ Worked example
Let us analyze and write out a rhythm pattern in 4/4 meter. We want a pattern that adds up to exactly four beats using a whole note, four sixteenth notes, and other notes.
First, check the meter. A 4/4 meter means we must have exactly four beats in our measure.
Next, let us choose our first note. We can write one quarter note, which equals one beat.
Then, let us add our group of four sixteenth notes. This group equals one beat. Now we have two beats total.
After that, let us write one half note. A half note equals two beats.
Finally, add the beats together: 1 beat + 1 beat + 2 beats equals 4 beats. The pattern is complete and correct!
