A scale is a set of musical notes played in order. Think of it like a ladder of sounds that goes up and down. The two most common types of scales are major and minor.
Major scales sound bright, happy, and cheerful. Songs like 'Happy Birthday' use major scales. This scale uses a specific pattern of steps that makes our ears feel happy and relaxed.
Minor scales sound mysterious, sad, or dramatic. Many spooky Halloween songs or dramatic movie themes use minor scales. By lowering just a couple of notes in the scale, the whole mood changes.
Let us see how changing one note changes a scale from major to minor. We will start with a C Major scale and turn it into a C Minor scale.
- Find the notes of the C Major scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.
- Identify the third note of this scale, which is E. In a major scale, this note sounds bright.
- Lower this third note by a half-step. The note E becomes E-flat (Eb). This small drop is the secret to the sad minor sound!
- Identify the sixth note (A) and seventh note (B) of the scale.
- Lower both of those notes by a half-step too. A becomes A-flat (Ab), and B becomes B-flat (Bb).
- Play the new scale: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C. You just made a C Minor scale!
