Let's compare two scales starting on the note C. We will see why the C Major scale sounds bright, while the C Minor scale sounds mysterious.
First, look at the notes of the C Major scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C. These notes sound very stable and bright together.
Next, look at the C Minor scale: C, D, E-flat, F, G, A-flat, B-flat, and C. Notice how three of the notes have a flat (flat symbol looks like a small 'b').
Compare the third note of each scale. In C Major, the third note is E. In C Minor, we lower that note to E-flat.
This small change of lowering the third note is the main secret! It immediately takes away the bright feel and creates a dark, moody sound.
By changing just three notes, we completely transformed a happy tune into a dramatic, mysterious soundtrack!
