Leo has a math problem: 'Mia has 12 apples. She gives 4 to Sam. How many apples does Mia have left?' Let's use our five-step problem-solving model to solve this together!
- 1. Analyze: Read the question. The important clues are '12 apples', 'gives 4 away', and 'how many left'.
- 2. Plan: Since she 'gives away' apples, we need to subtract. Our plan is to write a subtraction sentence.
- 3. Solve: Write down 12 minus 4. We count back to find that 12 - 4 = 8.
- 4. Justify: We can prove this by adding. If we add 8 and 4, we get 12. This shows our math is correct!
- 5. Evaluate: Does 8 make sense? Yes, 8 is less than 12, which is correct because she gave some away.
